Webb observations of Abell 2744-QSO1 have provided evidence for an unusually massive black hole in the early universe, NASA reported on 27 May. The system is seen as it was about 700 million years after the Big Bang, with foreground gravitational lensing helping astronomers examine its light.
Measurements of gas motion indicate a black hole of roughly 50 million solar masses, accounting for at least two-thirds of the system's measured mass. That imbalance supports the possibility that the black hole grew before a substantial surrounding galaxy formed. Researchers are still considering different formation scenarios, including the collapse of a large gas cloud. The observations constrain those ideas but do not settle how every early black hole originated.
