The seventeenth conference of parties to the UN Convention to Combat Desertification opened in Ulaanbaatar on 17 August. The official opening-day programme records statements from governments and international organisations as delegates began negotiations on land degradation, desertification and drought.
Hosted by Mongolia, the conference links environmental restoration with livelihoods, resilience and the financing needed to protect productive land. Those issues are particularly consequential for communities dependent on farming and pastoralism, but their effects also extend to food systems and economic stability across borders. The opening marked the start of the negotiating session; it should not be confused with adoption of final decisions. Outcomes require assessment against the conference's eventual official documents.
