New transparency requirements under the European Union's AI Act began applying on 2 August, according to the European Commission. The measures address situations such as interactions with certain AI systems and disclosure of artificially generated or manipulated content.
The requirements include informing people when they are interacting with a chatbot in relevant circumstances and labelling certain deepfakes. They form one stage in a wider implementation timetable: the date does not mean that every provision for every high-risk system took effect at once. For developers and platforms serving European users, the changes make disclosure and content identification part of product design and deployment. The exact obligations depend on the type of system and its use, rather than applying identically to all software containing AI.
